These debates will be the second in the 2024 presidential race, which began after President Joe Biden exited the election campaign.
Based on a New York Times/Siena College poll conducted from September 3 to 6, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump received almost equal support from potential voters. Harris garnered 47%, while Trump received 48%. This poll comes amid heightened attention to the upcoming presidential debates set for November 5.
Battle for the States
While national polls show nearly equal standings between Harris and Trump, the situation in swing states remains more tense. According to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, in key states like Georgia and Arizona, the polls show a slight advantage for Harris. In Georgia, she leads Trump by just 0.4%, and in Arizona, their support is nearly identical.
The former senator’s campaign is focused on garnering support from women and young voters, while Trump is concentrating on attracting working-class voters and those in rural areas.
Moreover, the Times/Siena poll showed that 60% of Americans believe the country is moving in the wrong direction, while only 30% are confident in the chosen course. This reflects general dissatisfaction with the country’s economic situation and social polarization, which also impacts election results.
According to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, the average national polling figures indicate that Harris leads Trump by 3.8%. Harris supports 49.5% of voters, while Trump holds 45.7%.
Despite this, Trump maintains strong support among the Republican electorate, particularly in the Southern states and the Midwest. Meanwhile, Harris receives strong backing in major cities and among younger voters.
